10 Ways to Bring the Light Into Halloween

WELCOME to Issue #213 of The Seedhead from Alex and Hannah at Dandelion Resourcing - a weekly confidence booster to help you step into naturally supernatural discipleship and mission!

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
John 1:5

We are living in a time when the enemy is more overtly on the offensive, and spiritual warfare is becoming increasingly evident. In these moments, it's crucial to ask the Lord how He desires you to engage.

This means we must pray! Let’s be interceding for our friends and neighbors, asking that darkness would be exposed and that they would be drawn to the light of Christ. Pray also for protection against the schemes of the enemy.

Halloween presents an incredible opportunity to engage with your community. Families are out and about, likely coming to your doorstep seeking fun and connection. How can you adopt a posture of welcome, kindness, and generosity during this time? Consider how God may be calling you to make His love known through your interactions.

Here are 10 practical ideas that you can try:

  1. ‘You’ve been booed!’

We do this every year and it’s a great way to give instead of receive, and to counteract the prevailing culture. Here’s a site with a great template.

  2. Prayer walk
Do this in your local community, both before and afterwards.

  3. Host a pumpkin carving/ painting party
Have some refreshments, templates to draw around, a range of cutting implements, and invite families and friends. We do it in the garage because of the mess!

  4. Organize a fancy dress costume party/ parade/ contest
Kids love opportunities to show off their outfits and win prizes.

  5. Run a treasure hunt/ quiz
Follow clues to different places in your neighborhood (e.g. “What decoration is on the front door of 234 Pine Ave?”) and end up back at your house for prize giving.

  6. Enjoy games, drinks, and hanging out around the fire pit
You can do this after trick-or-treating while the kids enjoy their loot!

  7. Have a chili cook-off
Use bags of Fritos into which chili is served. This is probably best done before trick-or-treating begins.

  8. Serve hot chocolate/ apple cider/ beer
The parents of trick or treaters will love this (it will make you very popular!!)

  9. Host some sort of front yard party
Enjoy time with your community (particularly those who aren’t trick-or-treating) at the same time as being present and handing out candy to those who are coming to your door.

  10. Sit out front with friends
We regularly do this with our empty-nest neighbors while handing out candy. We have a ‘candy next door!’ sign at the end of our driveway pointing to where we are.

Next Steps

  • Pray about which of the above things you are going to do this Halloween

  • Make a plan NOW so that you don’t end up rushing to make this happen at the last moment!

LEARN MORE ABOUT SPIRITUAL WARFARE…

If this taster on proactive spiritual warfare intrigues you, then you’ll really benefit from our upcoming Seeding Session - A Field Guide to Spiritual Warfare!

We will be sharing proven, biblically grounded, and repeatable strategies for engaging in effective spiritual warfare. We’ll also give you a clear understanding of the nature of the battle, and how you can appropriately engage.

There will also be time for your questions, and to figure out how to apply what you learn locally.

As always, everyone who signs up will receive a full recording of the session, which you can share freely in your local church context.

The training will be on Tuesday October 15 at 12pm EST/ 9am PST, and costs $49, including for the recording.

Here’s the direct link to sign up, and here’s our page on Seeding Sessions.

We’re joining with you in praying that we would all show the light of Jesus through our loving presence in this season.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

With love,

Alex + Hannah
