5 Steps to Spot Your Person of Peace
“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them.”
(Luke 10:5-6)
‘Peace’ is a word of huge significance in the Bible.
→ Peace is a great blessing.
→ It means far more than the lack of war or hostility. Peace is not just an absence of certain circumstances, but the presence of God and his active rule.
→ It means wholeness, soundness, well-being, oneness with God – every kind of blessing and good.
The New Testament Greek word for peace is ‘eirene’, which translates as, ‘the way that leads to peace’. This points us towards salvation, since true peace can only be found when we are restored to our home in the household of God.
‘Eirene' comes from a root verb meaning ’to join’. If we put this together, we can conclude that a Person of Person is a lost person who is open to joining the way of Jesus that leads to peace and salvation. Only God can make us fully whole, so that we experience His blessings and goodness.
Stop Messing Up Evangelism!
Jesus instructed us to focus our witness on those who are (or could be) our People of Peace. Yes, of course we’re to be kind to everyone else, but we are to give our best efforts to those who are most open to the Gospel.
This is (part of) what He meant when He told us to look around for where the fields are whitest unto harvest.
In your everyday life on mission, this means you primarily invest into those who are most open to how Jesus looks in you.
It works like this: somehow your Jesus journey intersects in a compelling way with their spiritual story and deepest desires. You will notice their openness to the message of Jesus as it is revealed through your life. Where that happens, he or she is likely a Person of Peace to you.
Remember that Jesus is crystal clear: don’t expect everyone to be open to His presence revealed through you, but there will be some. It is these people who you are to invest into deeply, allowing them to encounter God through you.
And a true Person of Peace will not only be personally impacted, but will also open up their networks of relationships to you - and thus the Gospel. See, for example, the woman of Samaria (Acts 4), Cornelius (Acts 10), Lydia, and the Philippian Jailer (both Acts 16).
