How to Handle Prophecy During a Church Service

WELCOME to Issue #238 of The Seedhead from Alex and Hannah at Dandelion Resourcing - a weekly confidence booster to help you step into naturally supernatural discipleship and mission!

When to say ‘no’ without quenching the Spirit or crushing their spirit

Have you ever been in a church service where the sharing of a prophecy went sideways?

  • Do people in your church feel (appropriately) safe when prophecy is shared publicly?

  • Is there a clear process for weighing and sharing what the Spirit might be saying in church services?

The prophetic gifts are a beautiful thing when handled wisely!

Jesus wants us to hear His voice - and this means corporately, as well as personally. It is powerful, impactful, and moving to be in a church gathering where prophetic words are shared for the whole room, or for individuals to respond to within the gathered space.

Yet, most churches don’t do this well, if at all.

This might be from having their fingers burned in the past (“God says Ichabod over this church!”), or a lack of expectancy, or confusion about how to handle it wisely.

Most of us really do want to be radically open to the Spirit, yet we also take seriously the call to simultaneously do it in an orderly manner.

In this video, Alex gives some wisdom and suggestions from our many years of leading in the local church, where we have sought to welcome the prophetic gifts in weekend services with wisdom and sensitivity.

Here’s the video:

Next Steps

  1. If you’re in leadership in your church, how can you steer your community to become more open to the prophetic gifts in your corporate gatherings?

  2. If you’re not in leadership, how can you pray for, and encourage, your leaders to overcome fears or barriers to be more open to this taking place?

  3. As you look at your church services, what might be a gentle way to take the next step in prophecy?

  4. If you’re part of a house church/ missional community/ small group, how can you as a group be more open to the prophetic gifts in your gatherings? This is often a space where it’s easier to experiment and practice.

Paul tells us to eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1). Let’s not ignore that command just because we can’t come up with a wise process for handling things!

With love,

Alex + Hannah
